Mega Drive
Il Mega Drive fu lanciato nel 1988 in Giappone. L’Europa ha dovuto attendere due anni interi prima che potessero ottenere la macchina.
Progettato come la sostituzione per il sistema a 8 bit Master System, in origine gareggiò contro altri sistemi a 8 bit, vale a dire il Famicom / NES e PC Engine / TurboGrafx.
Il Mega Drive ebbe fortune alterne. In Giappone la console fu venduta in quantità inferiore sia dal PC Engine che del Super Famicom. In Europa, invece, il Mega Drive è andato decisamente meglio. Il praticamente sconosciuto TurboGrafx era estremamente raro e il Mega Drive era in grado di vendere in quantità superiore ai SNES, finendo la generazione al primo posto.
Tuttavia, il successo della console in Europa, come Genesis negli Stati Uniti, potrebbe aver contribuito alla caduta di Sega. Due add-on negativi, il 32X e il Mega CD diedero una scossa molto negativa alla reputazione di Sega, in maniera tale che l’azienda non avrebbe mai recuperato.
Un Mega Drive II ridisegnato fu rilasciato nel 1993. La console più piccola era più economica da produrre, simile nel concetto al Master System II.
